GARDEN 2017 | FIRST HARVEST ALREADY!

WE HAVE LETTUCE TO EAT!

The citizens of the Place Under The Pine were surprised this year to find the garden had started growing without their help and guidance. Mother Nature had worked her magic.

Lettuce, from last season, had somehow taken root or seeded it self and had gotten a head start on the growing season. Fast forward to now, early June, and the citizens of the PUTP are already harvesting lettuce! This is a new record. The quantity is also surprising, as there is already more lettuce than the citizens can eat. They have been gifting it to any and all that visit, but, there is still many square feet of the vibrant green leaf growing in the garden.

The prized raspberry bushes are doing well again this season. They have started to flower, which is a great sign that berries are on the way. The plant has also spread its wings and attempted to take root outside of the garden again. This year shoots have popped up in between the patio stones (a dozen feet away) and in random spots throughout the backyard. These 'offspring' will be dug up and given away to other local gardeners.

The following video is 6 mins of lettuce, raspberry bushes, other sprouting plants, and a vinaigrette recipe. Set aside some time and enjoy:

I don't know about you, but, my tool of choice when out gardening is a good hoe. It can do everything from weed removal, tilling, mixing...and you look cool holding one too!

WHAT'S ON THE TUBE?

VIRAL IS A GOOD WORD IN OUR WORLD

The Place Under the Pine is down one TV screen (good life lesson: toy cars thrown by three year olds and screens do not mix), but, that is not the Tube we are referring to. YouTube, that is the TUBE that has been generating a lot of discussion lately around the PUTP.

The PUTP YouTube channel / memory preserving experiment has gone extremely well. Dozens of weekly vlogs have been made and shared with friends and family.

Here is the latest - Apple picking | Sports | Rubber Boots

Recently, the channel has expanded with videos on cooking (Cooking With Olivia) and what the young ones take in their school lunch.

Lolli makes oatmeal choc chip cookies

The increase in Tube-talk has been about one of these lunch videos. We had one go 'viral'. Not take-over-the-world viral, but to put it into context, typically a video hits between 30 - 60 views ... this 'viral' lunch video's count was over 8,000 at last check (and still growing).

Be the 9,000 or 10,000th viewer. Here it is:

This is very exciting for all the citizens of the PUTP. YouTube is probably the most popular site visited, and everyone has their favourite channel. Being part of the "Tube" is a way of life around the PUTP, which is why having a little bit of success generates so much buzz.

ANOTHER WAY OF PRESERVING MEMORIES

THE ADDITION OF VIDEO

A major reason theplaceunderthepine.blogspot exists is to document the lives of the Place Under The Pine's citizens. The founders of the blog intended to preserve memories for themselves to look back on in the future. In addition, they believed the younger citizens of the PUTP would enjoy looking at their younger selves in the future. There was also a distant dream that future generations would cherish the opportunity to see their ancestors progress through the different stages of life.

The make up of the current blog, with photos and words, is wonderful, but, it does have limitations. Which is why the Historical Archives & Preservation of the PUTP Culture Committee has launched a video collection, which they call The Weekly Vlog. The mandate of this collection is to showcase daily life around the PUTP in small 'snippets' of video. These videos will add a whole new dimension to the documenting of life in the PUTP - seeing the citizens in action, hearing their voices, and seeing their mannerisms. Priceless.

March 2016 will go down on record as the first month of The Weekly Vlog. This could be the start of the new way of record keeping in the PUTP.

Below are the first few 'Weekly Vlogs'.

March 2016 Week 5 - Getting Ready For Bed | What Are We Reading

March 2016 Week 4 - Lib & Dad Do Errands | Park Time | Thrift Shopping | Easter

March 2016 Week 3 - Lolli's Birthday | Pasta Dinner

March 2016 Week 2 - A Game Of Pictionary | A Walk In The Woods | Colouring
